Foresight Extinguishes Deer Run Fire
Foresight Energy announced that on July 28 a team of examiners and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) officials re-entered the company's Deer Run mine and conducted an examination. This examination included visual observations and air quality and quantity readings throughout the mine. Based on this exam, and the continued low carbon monoxide levels, it appears that the effort to contain and extinguish the fire has been successful.
DRA Buys Taggart Global From Forge
DRA Group Holdings Pty. Ltd. will acquire the Forge Group North America companies formerly known as Taggart Global. The transaction is expected to close shortly and the terms of the deal were not disclosed. DRA is a South African-based multidisciplinary engineering group that specializes in mining, minerals processing and infrastructure services. It has offices and operations in nine African countries, Australia, Canada, China, India and the USA now.
Exxaro Acquires Total Coal South Africa
South African fourth largest coal producer Exxaro recently entered into an agreement to buy Total Coal South Africa (TCSA) Pty. Ltd. and its related export marketing rights through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT). The transaction is valued at $472 million. (TCSA) is the fifth largest coal producer in South Africa and has a majority interest in two main operating complexes, Dorstfontein and Forzando, located in the Witbank coal basin in South Africa's Mpumalanga province.
MSHA Unveils Plan to Change Civil Penalty Outlines
Federal officials are citing a more simplified, consistent process and a greater emphasis on more serious conditions for its move to publish a proposed rule that will change the way the industry is assessed civil penalties. The proposal, which was published in the Federal Register on July 31, will amend existing civil penalty regulations if made a final rule.
Canada's Estevan Mine Inks Long-term Coal Supply Agreement
Westmoreland Coal Co. recently signed a long-term coal supply agreement with Saskatchewan Power Corp. to supply more than 60 million tons of coal from Estevan mine through 2024.
Mechel, GS Global Sign Agreement
Mechel OAO, one of the leading Russian mining and metals companies, recently signed a supply agreement with South Korea's GS Global Corp., for as much as 2.8 million metric tons (mt) of steam coal. Up to 1.5 million mt of coal will be shipped to GS Global's power stations, as well as up to 1 million mt to Tongyang Cement & Energy, a GS Global subsidiary, from the Elga mine.
Antelope Mine Wins National Reclamation Award
Cloud Peak Energy's Antelope mine, located in northeastern Wyoming, received the 2014 Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. The mine was recognized for its innovative techniques to promote native plant species and control cheatgrass, an introduced, invasive, and undesirable plant species.
